The lips sit at the visual center of the lower face, and even small changes to their shape can alter how the nose, chin, jawline, and smile are perceived. For that reason, lip filler is never only about the lips. A well-planned treatment can define a soft border, lift a flat Cupid’s bow, or correct a subtle asymmetry, all while keeping the mouth in proportion with the rest of the face. A poorly planned one can make an otherwise balanced face look bottom-heavy or unfamiliar. At Snatched Beverly Hills, master injectors Ani Malkhasyan and Sadiyah Karimi approach lip enhancement as a question of shape and proportion first, and volume second.
Understanding Lip Shape and Facial Balance
Lip shape refers to the contours and landmarks that give the mouth its character: the sharpness of the vermilion border, the peaks of the Cupid’s bow, the philtral columns above the upper lip, the central tubercle, and the corners of the mouth. Facial balance describes how those features relate to everything around them. Two people can have identical lip measurements, yet one may look harmonious while the other looks overdone, simply because the surrounding structure is different.
The Anatomy Behind a Well-Shaped Lip
The lip is a layered structure of skin, a ring-shaped muscle called the orbicularis oris, glandular tissue, and mucosa, supplied by the superior and inferior labial arteries. Filler placed in the right plane and quantity can support the border, add gentle vertical height, and restore contour lost with age. Hyaluronic acid, the material used in most lip fillers, is a naturally occurring substance that attracts water and provides soft, flexible support. Because it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed, it remains the most adjustable option for shaping the lips.
Why Proportion Is Not a Single Formula
Patients frequently ask whether there is an ideal lip ratio, and published research suggests the answer depends on who is asked. Popenko and colleagues, in a 2017 study in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, found that raters judging images of young white women preferred an upper-to-lower lip ratio of 1:2, with total lip surface occupying roughly 9.6 percent of the lower third of the face. In contrast, Heidekrueger and colleagues surveyed more than 1,000 respondents from 35 countries for the Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery in 2017 and found that 60 percent chose a 1:1 ratio as most attractive, with preferences influenced by age, gender, country of residence, and profession. At our practice, we treat these findings as useful references rather than rules, because every face, heritage, and personal aesthetic deserves its own plan.
Common Concerns About Lip Shape
Most patients who ask about lip filler are not seeking dramatic size. They describe a specific shape-related concern, often one they have noticed for years, and they want it refined without losing the character of their own mouth. Understanding the concern precisely is the first step toward treating it well.
Asymmetry and Uneven Borders
Mild lip asymmetry is extremely common and is often related to differences in muscle activity, dental alignment, or underlying bone. Some patients notice that one side of the upper lip shows more when they smile, or that the border fades on one side. Careful, area-specific placement may help even out these differences, although perfect symmetry is neither realistic nor necessary for a natural result. Our aim is to reduce the asymmetry that draws attention while preserving the movement that makes an expression recognizable.
A Thin Upper Lip or Loss of Definition With Age
Over time, the lips may lose volume and the border may become less distinct, while fine vertical lines can appear around the mouth. The upper lip in particular may lengthen and flatten, reducing how much of it is visible at rest. Structural filler along the border and within the body of the lip may help restore definition and a modest amount of vertical height. For some patients, a small dose of neuromodulator through a lip flip may allow more of the upper lip to show without adding any product at all.
Lips That No Longer Fit the Face
Some patients come to us after previous treatments that were placed with too much volume, too quickly, or in a way that pushed filler beyond the natural border. The result may be a shelf above the upper lip, a lost Cupid’s bow, or lips that project forward in profile. In these cases, adding more filler usually worsens the imbalance. Patients in this situation often benefit from correction before any new shaping begins.
How We Refine Lip Shape While Protecting Facial Harmony
Our Signature Snatched Technique, developed by our team of expert injectors, focuses on shape, crisp borders, and increased vertical height while maintaining a flat, natural side profile. Rather than inflating the lip outward, we aim to build structure in a way that looks refined from the front and balanced from the side. Every plan is adapted to the patient’s heritage, age, and personal preferences, so there is no single Snatched lip, only a refined version of each patient’s own.
Shape, Border, and Vertical Height
We begin by studying the lips at rest, while speaking, and while smiling. Where definition has softened, conservative placement along the vermilion border may help restore a clean edge. Where the lip lacks height, product placed thoughtfully within the body of the lip may add vertical fullness without forward projection. Each decision is guided by the patient’s natural landmarks, so the result reads as an improved version of their own lips rather than a new shape laid on top of them.
Treating the Lips in Relation to the Nose, Chin, and Jawline
Because lips are judged in context, we evaluate the whole lower face during every lip consultation. A retruded chin, for example, can make even modestly sized lips appear to protrude in profile, and in that case supporting the chin may achieve better harmony than adding more to the lips. This whole-face thinking is the foundation of our facial balancing treatments. For patients whose goals include jawline refinement, we may also discuss options such as masseter treatment, sequenced so that each change complements the others.
When a Lip Flip, Dissolving, or Lip Rehab Comes First
Not every patient should begin with filler. When previous product has migrated or accumulated, our Dissolvant (Hylenex) treatment uses hyaluronidase to break down hyaluronic acid filler and allow the tissue to return to baseline. For more complex cases, our Lip Rehab protocol, created by Ani Malkhasyan and Sadiyah Karimi, resets the lips to their natural baseline and then rebuilds them with improved structure, proportion, and balance. This staged approach takes more patience, but it gives us a clean foundation for shaping.
Safety and Candidacy
Precise anatomical knowledge is central to safe lip enhancement. In a large study of 193 anatomical specimens published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2017, Cotofana and colleagues found that the labial arteries most often run beneath the muscle on the inner side of the lip, but that their depth varies along the lip, with the greatest variability at the midline. Findings like these inform where and how deeply we place product, and they are one reason we favor measured, conservative technique.
Candidacy is assessed individually at every consultation. Lip filler is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in the presence of an active cold sore or infection near the mouth, or immediately around dental procedures. Patients with a history of cold sores may be advised to use preventive medication, and those with autoimmune conditions, bleeding disorders, or prior reactions to filler are reviewed individually with our medical director, Dr. Joubin Gabbay, and nurse practitioner, Hegi Harutyunyan.
What to Expect From Lip Filler at Snatched Beverly Hills
Knowing what the process involves helps patients feel prepared and makes it easier to judge the outcome fairly. Lip filler is minimally invasive, but the lips are a sensitive and highly vascular area, and a short period of adjustment is normal. We walk you through each stage in advance so there are no surprises.
Treatment Day
A lip filler appointment at our Beverly Hills practice typically takes about 30 minutes once the plan has been agreed. A dental block is offered to keep you comfortable throughout treatment. Results are visible immediately, and we review the shape with you in the mirror before you leave.
Swelling, Settling, and Follow-Up
Swelling is usually most noticeable during the first 24 to 72 hours and often appears uneven as it resolves, which can be surprising if you are not expecting it. Mild bruising or tenderness may also occur. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, heat exposure, and alcohol for a short period after treatment, and we generally advise waiting about two weeks before evaluating the final shape. If a small refinement is appropriate, it is easier to plan once the tissue has fully settled.
Realistic Outcomes and Longevity
Lip filler can refine shape, restore definition, and improve balance, but it works within the limits of each patient’s anatomy, dental structure, and tissue quality. Hyaluronic acid gradually breaks down, and lip results commonly last several months to around a year, depending on the product, metabolism, and lifestyle. We would rather build shape gradually over two sessions than overcorrect in one. You can view examples of our work in our gallery to see the range of natural outcomes our patients experience.
Maintaining Lip Shape and Balance Over Time
Lip shape is not a one-time decision, because the face continues to change with age, weight fluctuation, and skin quality. Maintenance works best when it follows a long-term plan rather than an automatic top-up. At each visit, we reassess the lips alongside the chin, cheeks, and skin, and we only add product where it continues to serve the overall balance of the face.
Integrating Lips Into a Broader Plan
For many patients, lip enhancement is one element of a structured program. Our Snatched Regimen sequences treatments so that structure is addressed before volume and skin quality is supported alongside injectables. This may include collagen-stimulating treatments, skin tightening, or targeted neuromodulators in addition to lip filler. The intention is a face that looks refined and cohesive, never one that looks treated in separate pieces.
